Foam Class Scenario

Your company has been called to assist with an accident involving a large dump truck versus automobile.  It occurred at an intersection where the auto pulled into the path of the dump truck.  The truck struck the car just behind the driver’s door.  The dump truck skidded off the pavement into a marshy area off the road roughly 75 feet.  There are houses within 100 feet of the accident scene. It is a clear and cold day, 37 degrees.

The single occupant of the car, the driver, was DOA.  The driver of the dump truck was transported to the local hospital with non life threatening injuries.  The car has been secured to a roll back.

Because your engine has foam capabilities, your company has been called to assist with hazards associated with the dump truck, as reported to dispatch from the senior fire officer on the scene, a captain of the first due company.

You arrive to find all patient transports completed, the wrecker is preparing to winch the dump truck out when an argument develops between the wrecker service crew and the captain.  The captain was over heard screaming “Stop, Stop, It Is Leaking and It Is Going to Blow Up.”

You are the officer on your piece and as you approach the confrontation, you discover two different opinions being intensely discussed in relationship to the hazards associated with the leaking product.   State Police are on scene and not pleased with how this is going.

The captain was privileged to info received from the dump truck driver prior to his transport.  He advised the fire department that he had just topped off his fuel totaling over 100 gals of #2 Diesel.

As you become part of the “discussion” your input or advice to the captain would be which of the following:

A.   You agree with the captain, it will blow up any minute, running is the only solution

B.   No input, take your company back home and refuse to run calls with this department

C.   You suggest to the state police that one of the parties be arrested, so this situation can be resolved

D.   Suggest to the captain that your company start foaming operations immediately and call for tankers and more foam resources

E.   Other, explain -
